The pre-16 model is not sophisticated enough to explain some of the observations made when studying chemistry at post-16 level eg transition metal chemistry. The atomic model needs to be developed to accommodate this.

After working through this topic you will be able to:

  • describe the developments in the atomic model for post-16 chemistry
  • describe the electronic configurations of the first 36 elements;
  • explore ways to help students make the transition between using pre-16 and post-16 atomic models; and
  • tackle the misconceptions that can be introduced through the Aufbau Principle.
